Is the Lasik Eye Surgery Best for You?

Lasik eye surgery is used to certain visual ailments such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It aims to make better visual sight through permanently reshaping the cornea. It is a procedure done with the use of laser by ophthalmologists. Roughly six million Americans have gone through Lasik although it never guarantees 20/20 vision. Its long term safety is still unknown. But according to the report by the Ophthalmology Societies, around 95% of their patients are pleased with their new vision.

 

There is a list of compiled complications of Lasik surgery.

  1. It causes dryness of the eye. Experiencing dry eye is the most frequent complication related to Lasik. Even The US Food and Drug Administration warns about permanently experiencing dry eyes.  
  2. It results to visual quality loss. Some Lasik patients were reported to experience trouble seeing details in dim lights. At times, some even experience visual distortions.

  8. Until now, the real result of Lasik complications is not fully determined. It was recorded that FDA allowed Lasik manufacturers not to disclose the results of clinical trials. 
  9. After Lasik, treatment options are limited. Lasik treatments are permanent and unalterable.
  10. There are still safer options instead of Lasik. Eyeglasses and contact lens are still the safest methods to improve vision.

 

At present, the Food and Drug Administration is conducting a study which aims to determine the number of patients who experience the harmful effects which Lasik Surgery may cause. It is expected to be completed by 2012. Just recently, FDA sent out warning letters to 17 Lasik surgery centers for not giving full reports on the unfavorable effects of Lasik. Because of the reported negative after-effects by some Lasik patients, FDA will undergo a series of inspections to some centers for monitoring.

 

The price of Lasik ranges from $1000 to $5000 today. It is rather expensive. However, there are several Lasik financing options available, which is not a common knowledge. Generally, there is a very high percentage of the number of patients satisfied with the Lasik result. Animal Testing A Tragic Disgrace

Toxicologist John Draize, 65 years ago, invented the “rabbit test” as a standard for measuring eye damage when exposed to chemical agents. The rabbits are held in a brace preventing them from moving their bodies or heads for 21 days or longer after the chemical has been introduced into their eyes. The eyes are then evaluated for redness, corneal damage, structural changes and alterations in the anterior section of the eyes. The animals are then useless to the researchers since the eyes have been compromised.

This practice subjects the rabbits to pain and suffering and treats them like disposable tissues. It is a terrible, heartless method that demonstrates a total lack of respect for other living creatures that feel pain and fear as much as we do. Fortunately, there is an alternative method utilizing cow and chicken corneas from dead animals. This procedure has been approved by both the US and Europe. The dead tissues are exposed to the same irritants and studies instead of the live subjects. There is NO pain and NO suffering!

According to Thomas Hartung who is director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at John’s Hopkins University, the Draize eye test should become history as this and other alternative become available. The germ killing cleaning products no longer have to be tested on live rabbit eyes to see if they are safe.

We as humans have an obligation to safeguard the safety of animals. They are at our mercy and using them for this kind of testing shows a lack of respect for other life. We must employ methods that do not put animals at risk and expose them to pain. Only lab tests should be permitted and when safety and efficacy have been determined then human volunteers can be used. Animal testing never gives us the actual response anyway, so why torture these poor living creatures.

Approved and investigational accommodation IOLs

As we know, some people above 40 can not see clearly at multiple distances, which is caused by the lens’ natural aging and becoming rigid to move smoothly. Among all of the IOLs, accommodation IOL such as the Crystalens has a special design to treat the described presbyopia. An accommodation IOL provides sharp vision by shifting its position with the action of eye muscle and movement, rather than by simply replacing the natural lens. Accommodation IOLs belong to presbyopia-correcting IOLs, so that patients can get multiple distance vision from them.

Firstly approved in 2003, the Crystalens is the only IOL that uses accommodation technology. Bausch & Lomb now is marketing several versions of Crystalens. The newest version claims that it has better near vision and lower side effects.

Among the four types of presbyopia-correcting IOLs, Crystalens IOL is unlike the other three types, which are called multifocal IOLs. Multifocal IOLs perform just like multifocal lenses that the patient should look through an appropriate zone to get certain distance vision. However, IOLs are much smaller than contact lenses, so that these divided zones on IOL are too small to provide clear single vision. Patients should be aware that neither monovision IOLs nor presbyopia-correcting IOLs can provide perfect vision. Even standard monofocal IOLs may bring night glare and halos. This situation is also true for Crystalens IOLs, which suit people with both presbyopia and cataract. In addition to common complications, Crystalens is reported to bring potential astigmatism and posterior capsule clouding.

Besides Crystalens, there are several types of accommodation IOLs that are still under tests. Approved in Europe, the Synchrony IOL is undergoing clinical trials in US. Synchrony has been proved to bring fewer visual distortion and better intermediate distance vision than ReSTOR. Another type is Tetraflex, which has a square-edged, acrylic optic.
