Why You Do Not Have To Fear A Lasik Surgery

Thinking about eye surgery using a Lasik procedure is a big step, and many people are a little hesitant to ask the questions that they have. The Lasik procedure, though widely talked about, is not discussed in detail, and people tend to fear the unknown. This article addresses some of the more commonly held fears, and talks about the experience for the vast majority of people that undergo a Lasik procedure.

One of the most common fear, both when it comes to the Lasik surgery and any operation in general is the fear of pain during and after the surgery. When a Lasik surgery is performed the eye is applied with numbing drops. The patient also receives a mild sedative so they can relax and feel comfortable. So even though you may feel a minor pressure to the eye, it is relatively pain free

The surgeon does use a laser in the eye to help reshape the cornea during the Lasik procedure. Many folks are worried about the laser being shone directly into the eye, or that they might look away and, due to this, develop a serious complication with their eyes and the Lasik laser beam effects. In actuality, the laser is only active for ten to fifteen seconds for each eye, and the Lasik machine has a tracking system that allows the beam to be on only when the eye is in the correct position.

Another general fear for people contemplating a medical procedure is fear of “the scalpel”. Any Lasik procedure uses only a very small microkeratome blade to approach the eye, or some more recent Lasik innovations have the laser itself created the flap and avoid using any hard surface at all. There is no reason to be concerned about a scalpel, for the Lasik physician does not use one.

Many wonder about the horror stories they hear about this or any other operation, and wonder about serious consequences like going blind. According the government statistics taken by the FDA, there are no reported cases of blindness due to a Lasik operation.

Actually, the risk of a serious permanent complication due to the Lasik procedure is less than 1 percent, and the risk of any permanent complications even if not serious (such as light halos) is 3 percent or less. It is extremely rare for a patient to not have improved vision after a Lasik procedure.

If the fact that you are awake and your eyes are open during the operation bothers you, just remember that you are given a mild sedative and your eyes will be dripped with numbing drops.

Is it more the thought about the Lasik physician’s hand close to the eye that bothers you? Then just think about that your eyes will be applied with drops that make your vision black out for the ten to fifteen seconds the operation takes.

The History of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is one of the most valuable medical developments of our lifetime. It has given ophthalmologists a tool to improve sight and in most cases eliminate the need for glasses for good.

Since the new technique was perfected in the late 1980s it has transformed thousands of lives and continues to grow in popularity. This highly specialised procedure allows surgeons to reshape the eye’s cornea correcting the faults that cause blurring of vision. The treatment can be used to correct both Myopia (nearsightedness) and Hyperopia (farsightedness) so the days when thick glasses or contact lenses were the only option to see clearly are gone.

The idea of laser eye surgery has been around since the 1950s and was the result of several different doctors who all played a part in the advance of the procedure. The technique was initially the innovation of Jose Barraquer, a Spanish ophthalmologist who first came up with the idea of cutting into the eye’s cornea to alter its shape.

Twenty years on, the radial keratotomy procedure was developed by the Russian doctor, Svyatoslav Fyodorov, who stumbled upon the important finding when he was treating a boy who had fallen and cut his eye on his glasses. Fyodorov discovered that by shaving off the front layer of the eye the young boy had recovered with better sight than before.

The development of the Excimer laser by a group of scientists from the University of California turned the eye surgery dream into a reality and, because of the inventiveness and dedication of these doctors, the first pioneering surgery was performed in 1989 in Greece. Since then the operation has become a common procedure performed around the globe.

Further developments to the procedure have resulted in two main types of laser eye surgery. Photorefractive Keratectomy, commonly known as PRK, a procedure carried out on the surface of the eye, and LASIK surgery, which differs because of the incision made to the surface of the eye and the laser treatment that is applied to the corneal tissue beneath.

Because of the delicate nature of an eye the operation needs to be performed with great care and, although the technology sounds complicated, in the hands of a qualified practitioner it is a relatively straightforward one. In general, the operation takes around 30 minutes although the actual laser treatment can take as little as a minute.

The technology and development of laser eye surgery has resulted in a simple painless procedure with a very quick recovery time. Today the surgery boasts a 95% success rate with most patients enjoying full 20/20 vision which is a testament to the brilliance of the doctors who invented the ground breaking operation.

Everything About LASIK Surgery

The most popular eye surgery today is LASIK surgery. It is efficient, fast, very gentle and with few complications. For most people the LASIK surgery can help them no matter if they are nearsighted, farsighted and have astigmatism.

LASIK technique is a further development of the older PRK laser surgery. Both operations are done by removing the outer cornea layer, so the laser can remove the tissue. The difference is that while the PRK eye surgery scrapes the outer layer of the cornea away, the LASIK surgery will cut a flap in the cornea that can bend. After the surgery the flap will be put back again.

The operation itself takes only a few minutes and is completely painless. The eye will be anaesthetized right before the surgery, and most people will not feel any pain at all. Subsequently the flap will be cut and the laser surgery can be made.

The actual operation only takes between 30 seconds and two minutes. A laser specially designed for operating in the eye’s sensitive tissues will be used. After the operation the flap is put back in place.

It is possible to leave the operating room right after the surgery. The eyes may sting a little bit, so it is advised to rest for the rest of the day. A nap can also help.

For most people the sight will have improved right after the operation. It will then stabilize over the next weeks.

After the eye surgery the eyes can feel a little dry. It is therefore recommended to drip them with a little salt water.

All studies indicate that a permanent sight improvement is provided by the LASIK operation. And previous bad eyesight will not return again. But a possible, natural change of sight in the future is not possible to prevent by the operation. So the surgery should not be done before the sight is stable.

The age-related long-sightedness that all people will experience can also not be prevented by a LASIK operation.
