An overview of Sjogren’s syndrome

The Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation points out that 90% out of 4 million patients who have the disease are women, since older women beyond menopause are susceptible to it. Sjogren’s syndrome affects moist and lubricated eyes and mouth by damaging related glands, resulting in dry eyes.

Other symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome include unusual dryness in the vaginal area, dry sinuses and frequent sinus infections, dry and sore mouth, inability to chew and swallow properly, dry and sore skin etc… Burry vision, eye burning sensation, grittiness and light sensitivity are also possible signs of Sjogren’s syndrome.

There are still various side effects caused by Sjogren’s syndrome. Extreme eye dryness may damage surface tissue of cornea and conjunctiva, leading to scarring and infection. Blepharitis can be caused by irritation and inflammation of the eyelid glands. Dry mouth can lead to rapid tooth decay or loss, unless you use artificial saliva lubricants to moisten your mouth. Other potential diseases that can be caused by Sjogren’s syndrome include lymphoma, swollen or enlarged lymph nodes and vasculitis.

In its secondary form, Sjogren’s syndrome is always accompanied by other autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus and thyroiditis, which cause inflammatory effects in different organs. These abnormal immune responses may be inherited or caused by viral or bacterial infections. Sjogren’s syndrome is sometimes associated with celiac disease. Other reasons that may contribute to dry eye include an arid environment, certain medications and improper memory metal eyeglasses.

The diagnosis of Sjogren’s syndrome involves various tests. A five-minute testing of the tears amount of the eye using a strip of test paper in the corner of your eye can evaluate the degree of dry eye. Vital dye staining can also measure eye dryness. Antinuclear antibodies such as SS-A and SS-B can be discovered using a simple blood test if a patient has Sjogren’s syndrome. A tissue sample from a salivary gland of your lip can be used to analyze the amount and quality of saliva produced in your mouth.

Prolonged artificial tears or ointments treatments can ease dry eye caused by Sjogren’s syndrome. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen can be used to treat pain or inflammation, and immunosuppressant will be effective for extreme Sjogren’s syndrome.

Symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome can be relieved in various ways. Different parts of the body need different solutions: water and sugarless gum for moist mouth, artificial tears for wet eyes, saline spray for nose, and humidified air for moist skin.

The 1Day Acuvue — Are Fresh Contacts Every Day A Good Thing?

After wearing 1Day Acuvue contacts for about three years, I have opinions about these lenses.  These are Johnson and Johnson contacts and really surprised me at first.  Never would I have thought a disposable contact would have been like this…

See, in the past it wasn’t much fun to get new contacts.  There was variation from lens to lens and sometimes a lens just wouldn’t work.  I mean it was just uncomfortable.  Not so with the 1 Day Acuvue contacts.  Even though you get new lenses every time you wear them, every single lens is comfortable.  There’s no difference from lens to lens.  At least none that I can tell.

I’ll tell you, throwing away almost brand new lenses after wearing them just once takes some getting used to.  Feels like throwing away money…  When you think of it though, it makes a lot more sense.

There’s just about no chance of an eye infection for one thing.  That’s a real plus.  There’s no more cleaning either.  Think of the savings on cleaning supplies, not to mention all the time saved.  No more contacts cleaning is a good thing.

Another thing.  What if some day you choose to wear your glasses?  No problem.  Those contacts just sit there waiting on you.  Those one or two week lenses are moving toward that expiration, even if you’re not wearing them.

I’ve worn the regular i Day and the Moist version.  Now I admit the technical difference is beyond me.  But it seems to me that the Moist version does feel comfortable a little longer on my dry eyes.  Either type is better than any other lenses I’ve worn…

The 1Day Acuvue in either model is a convenient disposable lens that saves you time and may not cost you much extra money.  That’s because you no longer need any cleaning supplies.  The Moist version is especially right for dry eyes.

Acuvue Contacts — Tips From A User

Acuvue contacts come in all kids of models for many kinds of vision issues.  Maybe you want an eye color change, which you can get with color contacts.  Then you can get the lenses to correct most any eye problem.  The ones I’ve personally used are the two 1 Day Acuvue models.  Here’s what I like about the 1 Day lenses.

1.  Since you change lenses every day, you always have fresh lenses.  That’s one reason why these lenses are known for comfort.

2. Fresh lenses also mean less handling of lenses.  That way there’s less chance of eye irritation or eye infection.  Less handling of the lenses means less risk.

3. Fewer hassles with cleaning.  There’s no cleaning and no disinfecting either.  So no chemicals to buy and no time spent on all that either.

4. The time savings is a real plus.  No minutes spent every day maintaining lenses.  Need a lens?  Just grab a new one and there you go.

5. The Moist version is especially right for those of us with dry eyes.  The lens stays moist so it doesn’t pull moisture from the surface of your eyes.

Those are pluses.  The only downside I see is cost.  They do cost a bit more than one or two week lenses, but not much more.  The extra cost is somewhat offset by the savings on chemicals.

Acuvue contacts are what I’ve worn for the last 3 years.  I’ve had the regular 1 Day and the 1 Day Moist.  I like both, but the Moist version really seems to help with dry eyes.

Accuvue Moist — More of the Story

The Accuvue Moist contacts I wear now are one of two types of 1 Day Acuvue lenses.  I wore the other type for about two years and couldn’t see why the eye doctor suggested these.  Now I know.

See, dries eyes are a problem for many of us.  As we age dry eyes tend to become even more of a problem.  It’s not just age related either.  Wind and low humidity both dry eyes as do other environmental problems.  And dry eyes and contacts equal uncomfortable contacts wearing.

The Moist contacts are formulated differently from the regular lenses.  Like many contacts, they’re already mostly water anyway.  Amazing isn’t it?  But these lenses are even more moist feeling because of the materials used to build the lenses.  Now I’m not sure of all the technical reasons why they help with dry eyes, I just know what I feel and see. 

These lenses have been more comfortable for wearing long hours than even the regular 1 Day Acuvue and it was the best I’ve tried in thirty years.

Just like the other 1 Day lenses, you get fresh lenses every time you put on the contacts.  That means you have fresh comfortable lenses.  Plus there’s less chance of eye irritations or infections since the lenses are always clean and only handled to put them in.  Then think of all the trouble eliminated since you don’t have to clean and disinfect these.

Accuvue Moist contacts are comfortable to wear and easy to care for.  They work especially well for somebody like me that has dry eyes.  The Acuvue Dailies cost a bit more than 1 or 2 week contacts, but you save time and money since there is no cleaning or disinfecting to do.

Ups and Downs of Acuvue Dailies

Wearing coke bottle glasses is no fun!  Know what I mean?  For the last 3 years Acuvue dailies have been the way I’ve used to get those glasses off my nose.  It’s a good thing to look sort of like a normal person.  Here are the ups and downs of the Acuvue contacts.

Ups.

1. No more cleaning solutions.  That’s because you get fresh lenses every day.

2. Fresh lenses every day spells comfort.  Fresh lenses are just more comfortable on your eyes.

3. No disinfecting either.  That means fewer chemicals still.  There’s more to that too.

4. Maybe less chance of eye infections.  That’s because always wearing fresh lenses and less handling of lenses means less chance of eye irritation and infection.

5. Clear, sharp vision.

6. They even come in an extra moist version for those of us with dry eyes.  Seems to work for me.

7. Marked so you can tell right side out.

8. Light tint… so they’re easier to find.

9. You can open lenses only when you need them.  Other lenses are every day moving closer to the expiration date.  But with the dailies, if you don’t wear the lenses one day, it doesn’t cost you a thing.

How about the Downs?

1. Cost.  The lenses actually cost less per lens than some of the more extended wear lenses.  You use more of them though.  So the overall cost for lenses is higher.

2. Only two models are available: one is the regular and the other is extra moist.

The Acuvue Dailies work extra well for me.  The quality of vision is good and the comfort is the best I’ve tried.  They do cost a bit more, but if you don’t wear lenses every day, they cost you nothing until you open another lens pack.
