Thinking about eye surgery using a Lasik procedure is a big step, and many people are a little hesitant to ask the questions that they have. The Lasik procedure, though widely talked about, is not discussed in detail, and people tend to fear the unknown. This article addresses some of the more commonly held fears, and talks about the experience for the vast majority of people that undergo a Lasik procedure.

One of the most common fear, both when it comes to the Lasik surgery and any operation in general is the fear of pain during and after the surgery. When a Lasik surgery is performed the eye is applied with numbing drops. The patient also receives a mild sedative so they can relax and feel comfortable. So even though you may feel a minor pressure to the eye, it is relatively pain free

The surgeon does use a laser in the eye to help reshape the cornea during the Lasik procedure. Many folks are worried about the laser being shone directly into the eye, or that they might look away and, due to this, develop a serious complication with their eyes and the Lasik laser beam effects. In actuality, the laser is only active for ten to fifteen seconds for each eye, and the Lasik machine has a tracking system that allows the beam to be on only when the eye is in the correct position.

Another general fear for people contemplating a medical procedure is fear of “the scalpel”. Any Lasik procedure uses only a very small microkeratome blade to approach the eye, or some more recent Lasik innovations have the laser itself created the flap and avoid using any hard surface at all. There is no reason to be concerned about a scalpel, for the Lasik physician does not use one.

Many wonder about the horror stories they hear about this or any other operation, and wonder about serious consequences like going blind. According the government statistics taken by the FDA, there are no reported cases of blindness due to a Lasik operation.

Actually, the risk of a serious permanent complication due to the Lasik procedure is less than 1 percent, and the risk of any permanent complications even if not serious (such as light halos) is 3 percent or less. It is extremely rare for a patient to not have improved vision after a Lasik procedure.

If the fact that you are awake and your eyes are open during the operation bothers you, just remember that you are given a mild sedative and your eyes will be dripped with numbing drops.

Is it more the thought about the Lasik physician’s hand close to the eye that bothers you? Then just think about that your eyes will be applied with drops that make your vision black out for the ten to fifteen seconds the operation takes.

Cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eyes. It affects vision. A thin lining of cloudy natural lens is removed from the eye because it blocks the passage of light. This is how a cataract surgery is done. Cataract surgery is a harmless procedure. Every year, there are more than 1.6 Americans who undergo this treatment to repair their vision. More than half of the American population have cataract or may have been through a cataract surgery by the age of 80. Some people believe that when one eye has cataract, the other eye will definitely be next. This is a myth. Cataract doesn’t spread. It can occur in either or both eyes though.

On the day of the surgery itself, there is a list of things to do such skipping breakfast and avoiding intake of liquids. An eye drop to dilate pupils and sedative are given prior to the actual procedure. Topical anesthesia is also given in order for the patient not to feel the pain. After the areas around the eyes were completely cleansed and after a sterile covering is put into place, at least a small cut is done into the eye to enable the surgeon to remove the cloudy lens. There are two methods to remove the cloudy lens. One is through sonically breaking up the cataract then extracted out of the eye. The other one is through mechanically breaking up the cataract into small pieces then removed from the eye through a small incision. After this, a plastic or silicon intraocular lens will replace the natural lens that was taken off the eye.

After the operation, a protective shield is placed on the eye. Then the patient is usually sent home after few minutes in the recovery room. Surgeons advise patients to apply eye drops for a number of times in a day. This goes on for few weeks depending on the surgeon’s advice. Just like any other medical procedure, there are dos and don’ts patients are given to ensure effectiveness of the operation.

The price of a cataract surgery is around $3,000, exclusive of health insurance. Fortunately, HMOs, Medicare and other health insurances cover this specific surgery. It is indeed pricey however, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery reports 98% of the patients believe it is highly recommended since it simply worked for them.

Lasik surgery is a medical procedure that is carried out by an ophthalmologist. It is used to correct abnormalities on the cornea of the eye such as myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia. These abnormalities usually end up impairing the vision, and are usually resolved by the wearing of corrective eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses.

The procedure is a form of refractive surgery that is frequently referred to as photorefractive keratectomy. The procedure involves the use of a laser and other specialist equipment. The procedure takes around thirty minutes to complete and a patient can expect to be fully healed within a short space of time while suffering absolutely minimal physical pain or discomfort.

After a series of consultations with the surgeon who will be performing the operation, the patient is asked to attend the clinic on the day of surgery itself. In the pre-operation stage the patient will be given a medicine to take that acts as a relaxant. This will be given time to work and the patient will be allowed to relax while the effects take place.
Once ready, the patient is sat in a chair that can recline to a horizontal position. An anaesthetic solution is the dropped into the eye using a pipette.

While the anaesthetic is given time to work, the surgeon will begin by mapping the eye. This is a computer generated process that is carried out by producing a blueprint for the eye that includes higher and lower order aberrations. This allows for the most accurate of surgical procedures and uses a format called Wavefront technology.

This is a more advanced method of the bladed procedure and is appropriately known as bladeless surgery.
The eye itself is kept open by a special instrument called a speculum while the other eye is kept protected with a separate shield. An instrument called a microkeratome will be used if the bladed form of surgery is being employed to cut a small hinged corneal flap on the outer layer of the eye.

In the bladeless form of surgery, a high temperature laser called an intralase will perform this part of the surgery instead.

After the flap has been created, another laser called an excimer is used to remove incredibly precise amounts of corneal tissue that is dictated by the mapping process mentioned earlier.
The amount taken will be enough to correct the abnormal shape and then the surgeon will apply very short bursts of light with the laser to actually reshape the cornea.

Once the cornea has been replaced, the hinged flap on the outer layer of the eye is replaced and the speculum is removed. The flap requires no stitches and will heal itself reasonably quickly.

Although the actual surgical procedure only lasts around 15 minutes, the pre-operative implications mean that the experience will last for around one hour in total.

Patient can go home the same day although they are not allowed to drive themselves, and a follow-up appointment takes place to check on the healing of the eye. Although vision can be blurred for some time afterwards, over 95% of patients are able to see perfectly afterwards.
