Astigmatism

If you have blurred vision when looking at objects up close, far away, and in between, it may be astigmatism. Astigmatism causes blurry vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea. Most people have some slight astigmatism but not always enough to cause vision problems.

Your Cornea and Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a type of refractive error. Your cornea bends, or refracts, light as it enters your eye to focus it on the retina. In order to properly focus the light, your eye needs to be spherical in shape. With astigmatism, the cornea is oblong or oval shaped, more like a football. When the irregularly shaped cornea bends the light it creates two or more focal points, rather than one clear focal point, causing the image to be blurry.

Recognizing Astigmatism

Astigmatism can occur alone or in combination with nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). Symptoms include:

  • Distortions in vision making it difficult to make out fine details up close, far away, and in between
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye strain
  • Headaches

Children can be born with astigmatism, or the condition can be caused by trauma to the eye due to an injury or surgery. Keratoconus is a disease of the eye that causes progressive thinning of the cornea and can cause astigmatism.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of astigmatism or any change in your vision, it is important to see your ophthalmologist right away. These can be symptoms of a more serious eye condition or health problem.

Astigmatism in One Eye

When vision is different between your two eyes, your brain chooses the better of the two images, ignoring the bad eye. The eyes do not work together properly and depth perception is affected.

In young children, whose brains are still developing, astigmatism in just one eye can cause lazy eye (amblyopia). Left untreated amblyopia can cause permanent vision loss in the affected eye.

Correcting Astigmatism

Eyeglasses or contact lenses are typically prescribed for people with astigmatism. In the past, soft contact lenses were not an option for astigmatism. Today there are soft contacts available for astigmatism, but they are more difficult to make and cost more than other soft lenses.

Corrective lenses improve your vision while you wear them, but they do not truly correct the astigmatism. Refractive surgery, such as LASIK or PRK, reshapes your cornea correcting the refractive error. If you are also nearsighted or farsighted, the surgery can correct that at the same time, giving you clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts.

Improving Eyesight Naturally: Strabismus (Cross-Eyed)

When both eyes focus on an object simultaneously it’s actually an incredible feat.  This is possible when both eyeballs adjust precisely for distance and are aimed in the same direction.  When these things don’t occur is what is known as strabismus.  Strabismus is more commonly known as cross-eyed or lazy eye.

Mental strain is the main cause.  This occurs when the eyes are pulled in different directions by the outer muscles.  When we lose concentration, the eyes will actually go off and do their own thing.  One eye may be off in its own little world while the other one is focusing in on the object.  When one eye is focused and the other is turned slightly up or down or even out, this is what is known as cross-eyed.  When it takes longer for one eye to catch up with the other, this is what is known as lazy eye.

The root cause of this ailment is always a subconscious reluctance to see and the lack of mental focus.  The feeling side is represented by the left eye.  The active thinking side is represented by the right eye.  A clash between feelings and thoughts can cause one eye to look away.  If you know which eye is the lazy one, you might be able to figure out what is causing the inner conflict.

Other symptoms associated with Strabismus are ADHD.  Finding stability is very difficult for some people due to their attention being divided between two people.  It might be between a mother and father, a parent and grandparent, a teacher and parent, etc.  It’s difficult for them to find rest and security in such an unstable situation.  They feel out of control which will only worsen the problem.

Relaxation is the key to solving most eye problems, especially Strabismus.  If you can figure out and face the inner conflict you have, you can then take the necessary steps to make peace with the situation.  The best cure for any eyesight ailment is relaxing and taking time for yourself.

How can Eye exercises cure and improve your eyesight

The screens (of computers, televisions or others) are the main cause of eyesight problems, because of their illumination, and our eyes focus on one point , the eye will dry as a result of lack in the winking action.

So In 1981, research performed at Harvard University Laboratories showed that when these muscles hold the eyes in one position for an extended period of time, they also squeeze the eye. This pressure can change the eyes’ shape. And if the eye is misshaped by only 1/25th of an inch, that can cause focusing problems.

You possibly can “train” your eyes to see better in different ways, such as in how your brain and your eyes adapt and function. Children with certain early vision problems, such as amblyopia or “lazy eye,” may need a specific type of vision therapy to make sure their eyes work together properly (binocular vision) and that vision is developing normally.

Bates developed exercises that can help people change their eyes for the better.

The first exercise is the Dot exercise. To do this find a period or comma on the page and focus on making it as clear as possible. Stare at the period until it comes into focus. Chances are after a few seconds the period will actually became less clear and blurry.

Try relaxing your eyes. Close them for a minute and let them relax. Now look at the period without straining. Don’t stare; instead, let your eyes slowly move around the page, over and around the period. Don’t focus only on the period, the eyes need movement. Make sure to blink a bit. Try closing your eyes and picturing the dot and then look at it again. Once the eyes are relaxed it should be easier to see the period.

The second exercise is the Word exercise. Find a word on the page that is five or more letters long. Stare at the word so that all the letters are in view, but don’t move the eyes. Focus entirely on the whole word trying to get the best image in your head. Again, staring and concentrating hard is going to cause the word to blur.

Now, relax your eyes and allow them to move slowly over, around, and across each letter of the word. Blink. Allow the eyes to lead you; don’t force them to look at what you want. The word should be clearer when you look at it again. Letter the eyes move around is what will help them work best without the strain.

The third exercise is the Double Vision exercise. This exercise is meant to get your eyes to work together as a team. Most people use one eye to look at an object, while the other eye does its own thing. Squinting can help bring an object into focus with both eyes, but this causes unnecessary stress. The trick is to relax the eyes, focus on the object in a calm way, and allow both eyes to focus together.

Learning exercises to relax the eyes is a great way to develop lasting habits and ensure great eyesight for years to come.
