My eye doctor taught me something really interesting about eye floaters and the truth about eye glasses recently. First, your eye ball is called an ‘eye ball’ because it is round and puffed up like a ball. Guess what makes it puffed up like a ball? A gel like liquid called vitreous humor. FDA-approved treatments for AMD

Currently, there are several FDA-approved macular degeneration treatments, which can preserve or even improve remaining vision.

Approved in 2006, Lucentis aims to treat wet AMD, which is a form of the colorectal cancer treatment drug. Lucentis is monthly injected into the eye. Its clinical trial results have revealed that 95% of Lucentis received participants improved or stabilized their vision. 40% of Lucentis patients were reported to have a 20/40 vision. Lucentis achieves these effects by targeting VEGF protein, which promotes growth of abnormal blood vessels in retina and leads to AMD. However, Lucentis still has drawbacks. Even if no adverse reactions associated with the injection itself have been found, Lucentis treatment has some complications, such as eye inflammation, increased eye pressure, traumatic cataract and retinal detachment.

Another FDA-approved treatment for AMD is Macugen, which prevents the abnormal blood vessel growth caused by a protein. The newer treatment also performs in means of injection in every six weeks. Macugen also received satisfying clinical trial results that 33% of its patients maintained or improved their vision. And Macugen was proved to slow the incidence of AMD-caused vision loss. While bringing high rates (up to 40%) of slight side effects such as eye floaters and discomfort, Macugen only causes less than 1% of severe side effects such as detached retina and severe inflammation.

As the first drug therapy for AMD, Visudyne has a painless but more complex treatment procedure. After injected into the patient’s arm, Visudyne will be activated by a non-thermal laser light during its passing through the retinal blood vessels. Vision improvement has been found in one out of six Visudyne receivers and vision loss has been significantly reduced. However, Visudyne is only effective for people with new blood vessel growth, which account for 40% to 60% of total AMD patients.

As an ever widely used AMD treatment, laser treatment is particularly for AMD patients with extremely distinctive bleeding under the retina. Today, laser treatment has been replaced by Visudyne, because the laser procedure brings scars or blind spots on patients.

Stopping Eye Problems For Computer Users

Anybody who sits for long periods of time in front of the computer at work every day has doubtless experienced some pain in the eyes, and negative results on their sight. I spend a whole twelve hours per day in front of the computer nearly each day, and after a few months of this I started to experience a marginally distressing burning feeling in my eyes when using the computer ; my eyes felt dry and itchy ; I could feel debris moving around in my eye socket, next to and in back of my eyeballs ; and I began seeing some eye “floaters”, which are dark dots that float around in your vision, as well as some black shadows and occasionallight flashes when I moved my eyes. Needless to say I was in a bit of a panic, since this was the first time I had ever had any eye problems. In my attempts to solve this problem I learned a couple of things computer users can do to protect their eyes and make sure they stay healthy. Please note that it’s not that I am a physician, these are simply some solutions that I looked into and found that they were personally really useful.

The single most important factor in lowering eye strain and its various successive Problems was to begin lowering my computer screen’s brightness. I had always thought that the standard brightness was the best, and was the standard since it was the safest and healthiest. How incorrect I was. The very day that I first lowered my screen brightness, the burning sensation in my eyes dropped by around ninety percent. I still experience it a bitat the end of my work day, but it starts much later and it is a lot less serious than before. The extent to which I turn down the screen brightness is dependent on the brightness of the room. If the room is dimly lit, I dim the screen quite a bit to match the room’s level of brightness. If the room is more brightly lit then I don’t lower the screen brightness that much, but I still lower the default brightness by a few button pushes. Please be proactive and begin lowering your screen brightness before you begin having Problems.

The second important issue has been to ensure that my eyes are hydrated. Your eyes can quickly dry out when you’re making them work hard, and this will worsen your eye strain and cause more discomfort and worry. All of those tiny itches and tickles you are feeling when your eyes are dry can be kind of frightening like there’s an insect or something moving around inside. But really it’s a result of the lack of moisture. So I recommend you buy some eye drops and apply 2 drops in each eye every couple of hours, or at times when your eyes get dry and itchy. Nothing fancy is mandatory, merely a basic vitamin-filled eyedrop will do. There are some eyedrops that contain eucalyptus, that has a cooling effect that will offer relief when you have a burning sensation in your eyes. Another important part of hydrating your eyes is simply drinking a sufficient amount of water and eating hydrogenated foods like vegetables and fruit. At work it can be simple to avoid drinking anything but coffee, but coffee is a diuretic which removes water from your body including your eyes. So take care you consume lots of water.

One last thing you can do to keep your eyes healthy and powerful is to swallow blueberries or blueberry extract. Blueberry contains anthocyans, a kind of bioflavanoid that is soaked quickly into the brain, and has a fast impact on your eyesight. So if you’re feeling heavy eyestrainand need fast results, as well as eyedrops I’d reccommend you consume some blueberries or blueberry extract capsules. I am taking two blueberry extract capsules everyday for ongoing eye health, and I am taking an additional dose whenever I feel some heavy strain.
