Astigmatism Correction – How to Get Rid of Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a very common vision condition which is faced by most people. Most people think it is not a serious vision problem. At certain level, astigmatism has no impacts on vision and does not need special treatment. However, when astigmatism results in distorted or blurred vision, eye discomfort and headaches, astigmatism correction is needed.

What is astigmatism? Astigmatism is a kind of vision disorders (usually blurred vision) caused by distortions in the curved shape of the front surface of the eye (cornea) and/or the curvature of the lens inside the eye. It can also be caused by years of stress and strain on the eyes. The strain on the eyes can weaken the tiny muscles around the eyes. Problems appear when the eyes need to change shape of cornea or lens. An irregular shape of cornea or lens prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light sensitive surface at the back of the eye. As a result, vision becomes blurred at any distance.

Astigmatism usually comes together with other vision problems like nearsightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia). All of these vision conditions are called refractive errors because they influence how the eyes bend or “refract” light. Now the question is how we can do the astigmatism correction when we have these errors. Below are just a few tips which you can do to heal astigmatism.

You can use a pendulum for astigmatism correction. You just lie on the floor and swing the pendulum over your head. Try to follow and focus on direction where the pendulum moves. This exercise can keep your eyes focused on one object. If you keep doing this exercise, your eyes will have better capability in focusing on a certain object.

When you feel your eyes are tired, you should take a break. Spend a few minutes to relax your eyes. During the break you can have eye exercise by moving your eyes around. You can also look at the yard or green grass outside. Keep your eyes away from your computer monitor if you work with a computer. Relaxation can release the tense of tiny muscles on your eyes. After the relaxation you will recover your vision.

Another treatment for astigmatism is called Orthokeratology (ortho-k). This treatment uses a series of specially designed rigid contact lenses to slowly reshape the curvature of the cornea. What is good about this treatment is that it is painless.

Eye surgery is also another option for treating astigmatism. The surgery usually uses laser. The purpose of the surgery is to reshape the cornea by removing a small part of eye tissue.

A Guide to LASEK Eye Surgery

LASEK surgery is a form of laser eye surgery that corrects refractive errors by reshaping the cornea – to this day, thousands of people the world over have benefited from this revolutionary procedure. LASEK eye surgery is performed on patients whose corneas are either too thin or too flat for LASIK eye surgery, but both procedures offer the same results in vastly improved vision and negate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Who Can Benefit From LASEK Eye Surgery?

Patients who suffer from refractive errors will be delighted to learn that LASEK eye surgery can once and for all allow them to live life with more freedom and no longer rely on corrective eyewear.

LASEK eye surgery can be used to treat the following refractive errors:

  • Short-sightedness (myopia) – This eye condition results from the cornea being slightly rounder and shorter than it should be. Due to this, the light that enters the eye converges just in front of the retina, meaning that suffers experience difficulty when trying to see a clear image at a distance. Through LASEK eye surgery, the shape of the cornea is corrected and the light is made to focus precisely on the retina – meaning that the blurred images at a distance will become a thing of the past, eliminating the effects of short-sightedness!
  • Long-sightedness (hyperopia) – Patients who suffer from hyperopia have a cornea that is slightly flatter and shorter than it should be. This results in a blurred image because the light that enters the eye focuses on a point just behind the retina. Most people who suffer from this refractive error rely on glasses on contact lenses, but through LASEK eye surgery, the effects of hyperopia can be permanently corrected. That means no more headaches and straining eyes to get objects – both near and far – into focus.
  • Astigmatism – In this case, the cornea is a more conical shape than it should be – this means that light enters at different angles through this cone. This creates two points of focus and ultimately a blurred image. Although this condition is slightly more complex than myopia or hyperopia, using the right technology, virtually all astigmatism symptoms can be treated through LASEK eye surgery.

What Does the LASEK Procedure Involve?

A patient is deemed an appropriate candidate for LASEK eye surgery when they suffer from one of the above mentioned refractive errors and usually because their cornea is not thick enough to withstand LASIK eye surgery. During the LASEK procedure, an ophthalmic surgeon focuses of the preservation of the corneal epithelium. In this way, the procedure differs from both LASIK and as the surgeon does not create a corneal flap or scrape and remove the epithelium.

LASEK treats the epithelium with a diluted alcohol solution which loosens it; the surgeon then rolls the epithelium tissue back and works with a laser to reshape the exposed corneal tissue beneath. The surgeon then simply smoothly rolls back the epithelium cells in their new reshaped position.

What Happens After Laser Eye Surgery?

Recovery time from LASEK eye surgery tends to take slightly longer than that of LASIK, but in the hands of expert surgeons, the visual outcomes are the same. Patients experience vast vision improvement with maximum convenience.

Post-treatment, patients are usually prescribed medicated eye drops which aid the healing process and relieve any temporary discomfort during this time. For about the first week, patients are given a night shield to wear when sleeping, which prevents any accidental rubbing of the eyes. In some cases, patients are fitted with soft contact lenses to give further protection to the healing eyes.

Patients who undergo LASEK eye surgery will find they have a newfound freedom as they no longer have to rely on glasses or the deal with the hassles of contact lenses or spectacles. Due to their vast visual improvement, many patients say that their self-esteem is boosted, along with their confidence!

Long Term Effects of LASIK and PRK Are Encouraging

The long term side effects of refractive surgery have been a concern for all patients and doctors alike. When Radial Keratotomy(RK) was being performed; there were many unknowns. Flattening the corneas with radial corneal incisions stretched the endothelial layer decreasing its’ ability to pump water out of the cornea. While most RK surgeons were not worried about the long term corneal hydration, questions did remain as to what would occur years after the procedure.

These RK patients do have corneal issues 10 plus years later. Their corneas often display a brownish line in the bottom half indicating iron left behind when the endothelial pump removes fluid from the cornea. In addition, most of these patients are far sighted with astigmatism and their prescription gets stronger later in the day. This makes it difficult to have an accurate eye glass prescription. Weakness of the cornea also increases the risk of corneal rupture when exposed to trauma.

LASIK and PRK do not flatten out the entire width of the cornea thus leaving the endothelial layer intact. This does not affect the pump or the functioning of the physiology of the corneal tissue. Therefore negative corneal changes that are displayed in RK patients should not occur in the LASIK and PRK patients.

According to an article published in the November issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology, there are no long term destructive corneal effects following LASIK and PRK. The study examined 29 myopic LASIK and PRK patients 9 years after the surgery and found them to display no abnormal changes. There was a 5.3% decrease in the endothelial cell density which corresponds to a normal cell decrease in individuals that never had the refractive procedure.

While the study did not examine far sighted post operative patients, they concluded that the results would be similar to the near sighted patients. Whereas post operative RK patients displayed corneal changes after 5 years, the LASIK and PRK patients did not show any signs after 9 years. Further studies must be conducted at longer post op intervals to fully examine the long term effects, but this initial study is very encouraging.

How to Deal With In-growth-tissues in the Corneas?

Like a lens, cornea is transparent, thin but very important part in eyes. Generally, the functions of iris must be cooperated with the assistance of cornea. There is no blood vessel in cornea. However, oxygen is very critical for cornea. And oxygen can only be sent to cornea by tear film. Many people in nowadays choose to wear contacts for some eye problems. But for these contacts, oxygen can not be let in thoroughly.

It is true that contacts can let oxygen through, but sometimes they can not. If people wear contacts for very long time, on these lenses will be some wastes that can be barriers for oxygen. So people should replace their contacts often. Still, many people love to sleep in their contacts. This is also a very bad for the health of corneas.

While at night, corneas will expand to some extent. However, contacts will worsen this expansion process which can not be compensated correspondingly. Fortunately, the latest contacts that can let through sufficient oxygen will not worsen the expansion. On the contrary, if the corneas can not get sufficient oxygen, some new tissues will appear on them for more oxygen. Such changes are mainly for some essential needs. However, these tissues will cause some problems on the eyes.

If these tissues are minor and do not grow big, they can be neglected. However, if there are amassing amount of these tissues, corneas will suffer a lot. The results will always be blurriness or even blindness. Luckily, there are some methods that can be used to deal with these problems. One should try not to sleep in their contacts. Of course, one can also choose to wear contacts with perfect oxygen permeability. Nowadays, the manufactures of contacts have noticed that there are some defects in their materials, so they spare no efforts to upgrade their products. The latest ones can now be used to eliminate many complications that often occur in the past.

These contacts can let through almost all oxygen that eyes need. It is true that wastes will be left on the lenses after wearing for very long time. But within certain extend, such waste will not impede the permeability of oxygen. Anyway, people are suggested to follow the advices of their eye doctors in selecting contacts, though there are some new products in the market. The latest lenses can seldom lead to the growth of some tissues in the corneas. However, people should often visit their eye doctors if they find any changes in their eyes, even though they wear some latest lenses.

Wearing rigid gas permeable contacts can help avoid such progression. Some eye doctors now tend to recommend some latest contacts. These lenses are made from very special materials and wearers are less likely to suffer from some in-growth-tissues problems in the corneas than they used to be. The eye doctors have the latest information of these lenses. Nowadays, many famous contacts manufactures are engaged in the research and development of such lenses. Astigmatism and presbyopia can be easily treated with their products. Contacts with perfect gas permeability can promise healthy eyes.
